CicLAvia October 10th, 11 pm

On October 10th Los Padres Ski Club is planning an outing to ride bicycles in the CicLAvia event in downtown Los Angeles.  CicLAvia is an event where the CicLAvia organization arranges to close major city streets for one Sunday to allow bicycles, scooters, roller blades, skate boards, walkers and runners, basically any human powered propulsion to ride the city streets, see the neighborhoods and businesses without fear of traffic and enjoy the (hip, savvy, fun, insert adjective) citizens of our fair city in a healthy and fun activity. It’s about a 5 mile closure, so if you ride every length of it, then reverse course, it’s about 10 miles total.  People bring some amazing bicycles and human powered machines.  Everyone has a smile, there’s lots of kids participating.  You won’t feel crowded or rushed, it’s kind of like canoeing down a river.  When people spread out over 5 miles of city streets, there’s lots of room. We plan to meet at 11:00a.m. on the street.  See your email for a map and details on the meeting spot.

The Polo Club is located at 3300 Via Real, Carpentaria, CA 93013. Admission and parking are free and carpooling is encouraged. Bar and food service is available at the club.

Dress code for the club is “Santa Barbara Casual,” which suggests nice pants/jeans and a Polo/ golf (collared) shirt for the gentlemen and equivalent for the ladies. We suggest leaving the flip flops and stiletto heels at home if you you plan to participate in the tradition of divot stomping on the pitch during the break.

It will be a fun and unique experience for the most of us!

Theater Night – Saturday, July 31 – Theatricum Botanicum, Topanga Canyon

The Los Padres Ski and Social Club invites its members to the Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon Saturday, July 31 for the World Premiere of “The Last, Best Small Town.” Playwright John Guerra draws on his own personal history from Fillmore:

Two neighboring families — one Latine and one white — live in nearby Fillmore, the self-proclaimed “Last, Best Small Town in Southern California.” Set during the first decade of the 2000s, immediately following the financial crisis, the children of these families come of age, fall in love, suffer loss, and continually hunt for their place in a changed world that can no longer promise them a better life than their parents. Guerra’s play is a striking 21st Century response to Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.

Join us for opening night and a picnic in the Theatricum’s beautiful gardens before the show. Tickets are $27 each and need to be purchased by July 20 to secure seats together!

What: “The Last, Best Small Town”

When: Saturday, July 31 6 PM for picnic, 7:30 show. Carpool from Ventura, leave no later than 5 PM.

Where: Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga, CA 90290. This is an outdoor theater and it can get chilly at night.

Parking: Parking is along Topanga Cyn. Blvd. (park within the white line/shoulder) or there is limited parking in their lot for $7.

Eats & drinks: Bring what you want for your picnic – including plates, glasses and cutlery. There are picnic tables available.

How: Send a check for $27 made out to LPSC to Rebecca Catterall or bring the check to our TGIT on Thursday, July 15.

EARTH DAY

Join fellow LPSC members as we celebrate the 51st anniversary of Earth Day with a beach cleanup. Most organizations are hosting virtual events throughout April (now called Earth Month). But we will be traditionalists with our event on Thursday, April 22. We will gather at 11 AM at West 5th Street & Mandalay Beach Road, Oxnard, CA (across from Oxnard Shores Mobile Home Park). There is plenty of parking along the street. Lunch, for anyone interested, to follow in Channel Islands Harbor (bring something to eat or pick up something at a local restaurant – we plan to picnic so bring a sitting device if you want.)

We are planning this around the low tide schedule. Wear your LPSC t-shirt, bring comfortable shoes (or go barefoot), sun hat/sun screen, gloves, a bag for collecting trash, if you have it – a grabber, a chair or blanket for lunch time AND A MASK (we will follow the correct guidelines).
